Follow Up Meeting

Event Invitation:
A follow up meeting from Chesterfield Climate Emergency: A People's Assembly. We hope to hear from the groups that were created at the People's Assembly to see what progress has been made and support them in future plans. It's also an opportunity for those who didn't attend to hear about the Assembly and get involved in the activity that it now being planned.

Plan for the meeting. Clare's thoughts:
  1. Update on the PA and any activity that led from it
  1. Consider next steps for CCC
It was a smaller turn out than the People's Assembly (as expected) We had 8 people. Their attendance was hugely valuable. There were a few people from local climate groups, one lady who was new to getting involved in groups and for whom 21st July was a first step into community action, an RSA Fellow who gets lots of social enterprises moving, and a borough councillor (and his son who enjoyed some time playing Lego!)
I'd planned to deliver the results of the PA and consider the next steps for Create Change Chesterfield
The comments on the results of the PA were really positive (welcoming, empowering, connecting, diverse, positive structure and conversations) I have discovered one missed opportunity. The email lists haven't turned into active groups, for a couple of reasons but mainly due to not finding the right person to 'run' a group. The people at the Follow Up Meeting didn't want to call this a 'missed' opportunity but a 'delayed' opportunity. They felt we could build on this in the future.
I had 3 things that I thought we could discuss to do with the next steps for Create Change Chesterfield. 1. Where do you see CCC having an impact on the climate emergency in Chesterfield? 2. Best practice to reduce loss of people/energy in our endeavours 3. A strong theme from the PA was spreading the message: How can we continue to effectively do that?
Music to my ears!

In the run up to this meeting I liaised with Perry Walker from Talkshop to discuss ideas for participatory activities that I could facilitate. Perry pointed me in the direction of this publication, Participation Works to help. I have no previous experience of facilitating a group meeting so I took advice and explained this to the group when we began. Everyone was very supportive and although the activities were only loosely followed key aspects helped me to keep focus. It also helped me to feel prepared!

Review of the Follow Up Meeting:
The focus of discussion was most definitely on the effectiveness of the deliberative democracy aspect of the PA. The group wanted to talk about ways to build on that. From including it in any future events, to finding ways to bring it in at a local level through Chesterfield Borough Council, to how it could play a part in our democracy as a whole. They wanted more people to experience it.  There was interest in continuing to address the climate but they were also keen to use deliberative democracy as a way to address wider issues in our society.
On consideration of where Create Change fits within the various climate groups in Chesterfield it was agreed that the opportunity to gather as a large community was extremely valuable. Comments were made about the energy on the day. It was said to be a positive and encouraging experience that empowered individuals to continue and build on their own endeavours. There was agreement that large, community gatherings where supported deliberation are experienced are a valuable addition to the overall community led action on the climate emergency.
I was encouraged to continue! The choice of 'spreading the message' as a theme for a future event was supported. We discussed it briefly but it was agreed that it was a big topic that can now be the focus of the next steps for Create Change Chesterfield.

I gave the group a Leaving Task
In the spirit of reaching out and spreading the message can we each identify a key issue to reach out about?
eg. What is the change that you’d most like to see in Chesterfield?
Do you, or anyone you know, want to take action on this?
What are the barriers for you taking action?
