Tell me again, deliberative democracy...what is it?

Ok, you might think that chats about democracy don't sound like fun. Fair enough.

The idea of deliberative democracy actually gets me quite animated! I've tried to distill my ideas below (but maybe it's best in real life so stop me for a chat sometime) This is how I see it:

1. A chance to learn. It is expected that everyone is able to understand the complex issue being addressed. The organisers provide learning opportunities to allow everyone to understand. This spreads an attitude that everyone in our society has a role to play in making decisions.

2. It is possible to make collective decisions. We CAN work together. This does not mean that we are searching for the win, win situation that makes everyone happy. This means that we can recognise what the outcomes might be and collectively assess the options.

3. Our voices are equally as valuable as each others. Different life circumstances and different life experiences are essential. Diverse voices are needed to create plans that consider every aspect of our society.

4. Feeling valued. Deliberative democracy says,
"We need you. We respect your ideas. We will listen.
YOU are influential."

This attitude has the potential to change our role in society. Citizens would play their part in the challenges we face. If this sounds intriguing you might want to find out more about deliberative democracy. Here's another blog post to get you started.
